We made Bread Today! I sure hope it tastes good!

As we were preparing breakfast this morning, Megan asked, “What is that white thing under your table?” I responded that it was a bread making machine and that someday we might try it out. Needless to say that was the wrong thing to suggest,
After nearly two hours of whys and why nots, Someday became Today.

We got flour, sugar, salt, butter milk and yeast out on the counter. It was fun to watch her expressions as she poured each ingredient into the baking pan. Each and every ingredient had to be identified, and details of why it would be used to make her loaf of bread were very important. She is really into the “WHY” stage when we are baking.

At 10AM as the last ingredient was put into the bread making machine, the next question was “Which button do I push to make this into bread?” I am not sure she was ready for what was to come next. The wait. When it started mixing the ingredients, she lifted the lid to watch. When it was silent, she lifted the lid to check and see if it had stopped. When the noises started again she lifted the lid and watched as the blade kneaded the dough. Then it was silent again, and again she checked to make sure it wasn’t broken. We were only 1 hour into this process and she had lifted the lid at least six times. I believe there is a line in the directions that states “Do not lift the lid while mixing, kneading, rising and baking are in process” Oh Well!

I suggested a book, and soon she was sound asleep on my lap. That was the only way we were going to get through the next 3 hours.

1 hour later my sister came by and asked if we could ride with her. We rode with Jolyn to run some errands and upon returning the aroma of fresh bread was a wonderful welcoming to come home to.

With oven mitts and a clean towel, We removed the Bread from the baking pan, and since we had only made a 1 pound loaf, it was a small square loaf. I was marveling that it has risen at all with all the attention it was given at critical times.

She insisted that I get a” Great Big Knife” and cut it. As I sliced off the first end I asked if she wanted butter and honey on her slice only to be chided and reminded that this was her bread and she was “Taking the whole thing home to her family”.

I do hope the Lloyds enjoyed their fresh baked bread with their dinner tonight.

I used to love to make bread, unfortunately after almost a year of just home made bread I am done. Andrew still enjoys it, so he makes it or I buy a loaf from the store. I am glad that you could show Megan how to make it.
